Gerard’s parents and Michel’s parents have been friends since they were young. So are Gerard, his brother, Christian, his sister, Perlette and Michel. Gerard’s birthday happened to be 2 days after our arrival in France. He lives in a farm on a hill about 40 minutes away from Le Puy en Velay. It is an idyllic setting with stone houses, barns, tractors, fruit and vegetable garden, open fields, horses and rolling hills. The house is fitted with solar energy panels and there are flowers everywhere.พ่อแม่ของเจอราร์ดกับพ่อแม่ของมิเชลเป็นเพื่อนสนิทกันตั้งแต่สมัยวัยรุ่น เจอราร์ด กับพี่ชาย(คริสเตียง)และน้องสาว(เพอร์เล็ต)ก็เป็นเพื่อนของมิเชล เจอราร์ดจัดงานวันเกิดพอดีกับที่เราไปอยู่ฝรั่งเศสได้สัก 2 วัน บ้านของเจอราร์ดอยู่บนเนินสูงห่างจากเลอพุอีอองเวอเลย์ประมาณ 40 นาที เป็นบ้านที่มีบรรยากาศในอุดมคติเลย บ้านก่อจากหิน มีโรงนา รถแทร็กเตอร์ สวนผักผลไม้ มีม้าด้วย มองจากบ้านเห็นเนินเขาสลับซับซ้อน บ้านนี้เป็นบ้านที่ใช้พลังงานแสงอาทิตย์แล้วมองไปทางไหนก็จะเห็นแต่ดอกไม้
The scene:
Everything was picture perfect. The tables were all set casually but elegantly with garden flowers. We all parked the car in the back yard. There were certainly plenty of kisses and hand-shakes. Everyone was friendly and helpful, carrying things from the kitchen, serving food, looking after the kids and pouring wine. I don’t think I saw anyone engaging themselves on the phone. It was the moment to enjoy each other’s company. It rained for about 3 minutes and then there was sunshine all the way to the end. We had a great feast. The pork roast, potato baked in goose fat, the home-made bread and the apple tart were the best. If that sounds like a lot of food already, I can assure you that there were many more things to eat. Did I mention the entrée and the cheese?
As with many parties that we have been to in the past- This birthday feast lasted about 4 hours. Eating and friendship are sacred in France. One eats slowly and languidly to get maximum pleasure.

ทุกอย่างดูเป็นภาพที่เพอร์เฟ็ค บนโต๊ะมีการจัดวางแบบเรียบง่ายอารมณ์ไม่เป็นทางการมาก ตกแต่งด้วยดอกไม้จากสวนดูเก๋ เราเอารถไปจอดทางหลังบ้าน มีการแลกจูบและเชคแฮนด์กันอย่างถ้วนหน้าตามธรรมเนียม ทุกคนช่วยกันคนละไม้คนละมือ แบกอาหารและอุปกรณ์จากครัว เสิร์ฟอาหาร ดูแลเด็กๆ แล้วก็รินไวน์ ฉันไม่เห็นใครใช้โทรศัพท์เลย ทุกคนต่างมองช่วงเวลานั้นเป็นโอกาสพบปะสังสรรกันจริงๆ ฝนตกลงมาประมาณ 3 นาทีแล้วก็หยุด แดดอุ่นๆกลับมาเหมือนเดิมจนจบงาน เรากินกันอย่างอิ่มหมีพีมัน ของอร่อยๆมีทั้งหมูอบ มันฝรั่งอบไขมันห่านใสๆ ขนมปังพื้นบ้านสีน้ำตาลเปลือกหนา แล้วก็แอ็ปเปิ้ลทาร์ต ฟังเหมือนเยอะแต่นี่เป็นบางส่วนเท่านั้น อ้อ เมื้อกี้ลืมพูดถึงอองเทรกับชีส
โดยทั่วไปงานเลี้ยงแบบนี้จะเป็นคล้ายๆกับงานอื่นที่เราเคยไป คืองานจะลากยาวไปถึง 4 ชั่วโมง เรื่องรับประทานและมิตรภาพเป็นเรื่องที่คนฝรั่งเศสถือเป็นเรื่องใหญ่ เราจะค่อยๆทานไปเรื่อยๆเนิบนาบไปกับรสชาติให้เต็มที่

Food, flowers, cute children and dogs aside, there was one thing that made me think about life and family. It was a sense of kinship and family in a cozy French way. It is so easy for them to show it without being showy. So subtle you could see it in their eyes and the way they handle themselves. Grown up sons showed so much love and tenderness to Simone , the fragile mother. Grown up grandchildren also embraced her with natural grace. Though it was Gerard’s birthday, he and his family made sure that Simone was the most precious. The beauty of these gestures are universal. We love to see it but perhaps we don’t do enough. We have to think that we don’t do enough. I thought of my parents over and over when I was there.
นอกจากเรื่องอาหาร ดอกไม้ เด็กน่ารัก และสุนัขแล้ว มีอีกเรื่องหนึ่งที่ให้ข้อฉุกคิดบางอย่างกับฉันเกี่ยวกับชีวิตและครอบครัว ฉันสัมผัสได้ถึงความสนิทชิดเชื้อมีมิตรไมตรีและความเป็นครอบครัวในลักษณะของชาวฝรั่งเศส เขาแสดงออกซึ่งความรู้สึกแบบนี้ต่อกันได้อย่างง่ายๆแต่ก็ไม่ดูมากเกินไป การปฏิบัติต่อกันเป็นไปอย่างอย่างอ่อนโยนนุ่มนวลและแสดงออกทางแววตา ฉันได้เห็นลูกชายที่อายุมากแสดงความรักกับสิมอนหญิงชราผู้เป็นแม่ซึ่งสุขภาพไม่ค่อยแข็งแรง พวกหลานๆที่โตเป็นหนุ่มเป็นสาวแล้วก็โอบกอดหญิงชราคนนี้อย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ รู้สึกชื่นใจแทน แม้งานนี้จะจัดขึ้นเพื่อฉลองวันเกิดของเจอราร์ด แต่เขาและครอบครัวกลับร่วมกันทำทุกอย่างให้สิมอนเห็นว่าเธอเป็นคนที่มีค่าที่สุดในงาน ความสวยงามของการแสดงออกแบบนี้อาจเป็นสิ่งที่ทุกคนรับรู้ได้ เรารู้สึกปลื้มปิติที่ได้เห็นแต่บางทีเราอาจจะทำไม่บ่อยพอกับที่ควรจะเป็น เราควรจะคิดว่าเราทำไม่พอ วันนั้น ณ.ที่แห่งนั้นฉันคิดถึงพ่อกับแม่หลายหน
