How We See Things

Three weeks ago I watched the movie “The Mission” on CD with Michel. It was my second time seeing this movie and it has been 25 years since I last saw it at the cinema. I was still at school. I had forgotten how young and slim Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons and Liam Neeson were. In fact I didn’t remember many details although I liked the movie. Visually, all I remembered was the scene where Father Gabriel climbed up the big waterfall to reach his mission in the South American rain forest and another scene where I saw someone caressing the sloth. The music was certainly something that you couldn’t forget. But it was this quote that stayed with me all this time. So much has happened in my life since 1986, the year this movie was made. What seemed like beautiful poetry when one is young becomes so real when one looks at it with an eye of a much older person.
“If might is right, then love has no place in the world.

Enjoying...

When the traffic is slow and all you want to do is to get home is soon as possible, may be this is a good distraction. Take a picture without looking into the camera. The picture becomes an abstraction unlike anything else you could ever imagine. But this is also part of your day that is more beautiful than something too controlled.

I got myself a stone from the sandy island in the middle of Mekong River in Chiang Karn. It is well polished by the river stream. I like to feel the weight of it in my hand.

I saved some seeds from some capsicum and I tried to grow them in Khao Yai. This one is doing well.

I discover the the spraying gadget on the Windex bottle is really of great quality. This makes recycling a natural progression for me.

I love how the sun lights up the sky during sunset. But I love the fact that you could look straight at the sun without hurting your eyes and see something out of this world.

I have an easy to use instant camera which is too intelligent for me. Unless I tell it to turn off the flash light, it often surprises me with a flash. The results with the flash are not always pleasing. However, using a flash light is not a bad thing in this case. Here is a picture of some flowers without a flash. Before....

And below is one with a flash. I prefer the 2nd one. The image is much more exciting.

Praying mantis. They could stay quietly and still in one place all day. It is so peaceful to observe something so calm.

I don't know what this plant is called. I like the shape of the leaves and the fuchsia pink flowers. They look a little be manmade but they are something cheerful for the day.

Not so much about the noises but the way they look- fireworks on a happy occasion.

Needles, Wool and Books

I am taking a short break from posting things about France and talk about something else.

I learnt how to crochet in the late 70's when my mother and all her colleagues at work started the craze of crocheting anything and everything during their lunch hours. We went on holidays with my mother crochet projects. She once made me a hat while on a holiday in Bang Saen. She crocheted non stop in the car all the way there and back.

I learnt how to knit in the mid 80's. I was in my teens taking the southern line of the regional train ride into Sydney every morning and afternoon. It took me almost an hour each way- sometimes standing for the whole trip with a little sister beside me. On the train, there were many women knitting something. They usually had something interesting in their hands but mostly they made some very complicated knitted lace for babies. The way these women held their needles was something I couldn't master. They were quick and they were good. What did the others do on the train? They either had their eyes glued to the papers (usually Sydney Morning Herald) or they read books.

I taught myself how to knit because I wanted to try knitting so much. Now, whenever the weather gets a bit cooler, I know that it is time to knit or crochet. I also appreciate books and newspapers from watching others around me giving so much time to them.

Second Hand

I must admit that I believe in retail therapy. Shopping can sometimes brighten up your day almost instantly. I remember when we had the flood crisis in Bangkok. We evacuated to Khao Yai. One day we took a day trip to Nakhorn Rachasima. The trip was great but somehow it wasn’t enough. I remember looking for something lovely to buy to ease my anxiety. There was nothing to buy. Finally, I ended up with a bar of Moringa soap from the Body Shop counter at The Mall. It felt wonderful to be able to make that purchase. I like the scent of it too.

But shopping can sometimes bring on a lot of guilt. I think way I spend money is fascinating even to myself. While going though university, I spent very little on myself but my expenses were huge. I was a design student so most of my big expenses went to art materials and living. That left me with very little to spend on clothes. Buying second hand was a necessity for me back in the days when ‘vintage’ was not that cool. Second hand clothes and re-worked old clothes were my look. Buying second hand clothes was also a way to appreciate the cut, details and workmanship of old clothes. It is not always about saving costs. After graduation and earning my first pay, I went into a crazy period of reckless spending. Impulse buy was an obsession. I reach a stage in my life where we really have everything we need. Not super luxury. We have other priorities. Browsing has become a pleasure and buying something on a shoestring is a fun sport. Retail therapy only happens on a rare occasion.

Brocante (second hand) browsing in France is something I always look forward to. We cannot always bring everything back with us but we manage to bring something special and small when opportunities arise. These pictures are from Le Puy.
