Needles, Wool and Books

I am taking a short break from posting things about France and talk about something else.

I learnt how to crochet in the late 70's when my mother and all her colleagues at work started the craze of crocheting anything and everything during their lunch hours. We went on holidays with my mother crochet projects. She once made me a hat while on a holiday in Bang Saen. She crocheted non stop in the car all the way there and back.

I learnt how to knit in the mid 80's. I was in my teens taking the southern line of the regional train ride into Sydney every morning and afternoon. It took me almost an hour each way- sometimes standing for the whole trip with a little sister beside me. On the train, there were many women knitting something. They usually had something interesting in their hands but mostly they made some very complicated knitted lace for babies. The way these women held their needles was something I couldn't master. They were quick and they were good. What did the others do on the train? They either had their eyes glued to the papers (usually Sydney Morning Herald) or they read books.  

ฉันเรียนวิธีการถักนิ๊ตติ้งช่วงปลายยุค 80's ตอนนั้นฉันอยู่ในวัยทีน ขึ้นรถไฟหลวงสายใต้เข้าเมืองซิดนีย์ขาไปและขากลับ ใช้เวลาเกือบหนึ่งชั่วโมงในการเดินทางแต่ละเที่ยว บางทีต้องยืนตลอดทางแล้วยังมีน้องสาวตัวเล็กๆร่วมเดินทางไปด้วย มีผู้หญิงหลายคนบนรถไฟที่ถักนิ๊ตติ้ง ปกติจะถักอะไรที่ดูน่าสนใจ ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นเสื้อเด็กอ่อนลายลูกไม้ วิธีการจับเข็มของเขาดูยาก ฉันพยายามทำตามแต่ก็ทำไม่ได้เหมือน เขาถักเร็วและถักเก่ง ส่วนคนอื่นๆทำอะไรบนรถไฟ? ถ้าไม่จับตาเขม็งบนหน้าหนังสือพิมพ์(โดยทั่วไปจะเป็นซิดนีย์มอร์นิ่งแฮโรลด์) ก็จะอ่านหนังสือ

I taught myself how to knit because I wanted to try knitting so much. Now, whenever the weather gets a bit cooler, I know that it is time to knit or crochet. I also appreciate books and newspapers from watching others around me giving so much time to them.

ฉันเรียนวิธีการถักนิ๊ตติ้งด้วยตัวเองเพราะเมื่อได้เห็นคนอื่นทำก็อยากทำมาก ตอนนี้ถ้าอากาศเริ่มเย็นเมื่อไรก็จะอยากถักนิ้ตติ้งหรือโครเชต์ อีกอย่างหนึ่งที่ชอบคือหนังสือและหนังสือพิมพ์เพราะเคยได้เห็นคนรอบๆตัวให้เวลากับการอ่านมากเหลือเกิน
