Strolling Around His Hometown

This is a place where Michel was born. He went to school here before entering the university in Lyon. His first real job was also in this town. After all these years he is still able to maintain his relations with old friends from here.

Lafayette (a French aristocrat who fought in the army on the same side as
George Washington during the American Rovolution) came from an area near here.

Le Puy is not a big city but it has been there for thousands of years. The town is precided by the big Cathedral on top of the hill. On another hill, there is the statue of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus made from an old war cannon. Unknown to many parts of the world, this town is a spot for spectacular sites.

There are narrow cobbled streets in the old city area. You could walk for hours and still have plenty of things to see. There are buildings from so many different eras, many of which are well preserved. The whole city is surrounded by farmland.

For a long time, Le Puy was famous for its laces. Women, young and old could make laces with great skills for using at home, for sale and bridal trousseau. Times may be changing but there is a still a lace making center and a lace museum which ensures that the art of lace making continues.

Lemon Polenta Cake

Back in Khao Yai again after a week in Bangkok. I made this lemon polenta cake last night. It is Nigella's rescipe from here. I wanted to try to make wheat free cake. This cake with polenta, ground almonds and lemon juice seemed just right for me. I sunbstituted lemons with limes. I let the whole thing cool over night. It tastes good with the lime syrup but I would be as happy with a sprinkle of icing snow.

I took these pictures out in the morning sun. Initially I had some mint leaves on top. The gusty wind blew the whole thing away leaving only slices of lime. It is cool season now in Khao Yai. We are beginning to feel it.

Enjoying...

I find the common variety of garden plant very refreshing. I always wanted to grow Aloe Vera for a long time. I like the form and the pale green color. I also like the fact that it is a useful plant for ointment and for eating. Since this type of plant is so common in Thailand, I am a little surprised that they are not so easy to find in the shops. In fact it is easier to ask someone if they could give it to you. These are bought though.

I bought these pillows with handles around 3 months ago. They were sent by mail from Hand-ROOM in Chiangmai. They make colorful addition to our handmade home in Khao Yai.

Plants that don't need a lot of watering. This is good for when we are not here to look after them. Different types of succulents allow me an opportunity to play with visual composition. When they grow, the composition will alter. I understand now how some people are obsessed by bonsai or something. I could look at these all day.

Our cotton plant has pink flowers. Nobody ever told me they look this sweet. When the flowers fall off, the seeds become large and feels like a wooden ball.

Fueang Nakhon Bookshop at the 100 Years Market, Nakorn Rachasrima. Well stocked with quality books and good cakes.

Opposite Fueng Nakorn Bookshop, there is a shop selling Kanom Jeen and Mee Koraj (Koraj Noodle). The owner came to our table and started to play Thai music exclusively for us. So we grabbed his instruments and formed a band.

Autumn by the Side of the Road, France

A Castle near Le Puy en Velay

I still use computer access to the internet. When we were in France from mid September to mid October, there was pretty limited internet access the entire time, and that which was available was very expensive. Anyway, I didn’t want to spend all the time on the internet. Being away from the internet allows more time to look around and really appreciate what is around you. But it meant that when I came back it was difficult to get started on blogging and facebook again. I simply lost my rhythm.

Country Road near Le Puy en Velay
Another thing. As soon as I came back there was flood crisis so there were many other issues to consider. Also our Wi Fi system in Khao Yai is not the fastest. I lost touch with people, didn’t respond to mails (sorry) and blogging seems like something from the distant past. As you can see, I have started blogging again in the last two posts. I will do more from now on.

Here are some pictures of autumn in France. We were fortunate that this year, the weather remained warm right up until the final stage of our visit. Usually, by early September it would rain and the temperature would drop dramatically. What we enjoy is to go walking up country and enjoy picking black berries by the side of the road. There were still quite a lot of black berries around.
