We are stationed in Khao Yai this week and the next. We cannot go back until the floor at the condo is fixed. Fortunately, we have quite a lot of work to do here and the weather is good although there is a concern that it is the second time in 6 months since we fixed the same floor. This time, the renovation covers a very large area of the condo. All the furniture has to be taken out of the living room and the kitchen. The builders get to keep the house keys until the work is done. There will be cement dust and loud noises in our absence from Bangkok. The neighbors will certainly not be happy.
Our condo is relatively new. We are the first group people to live there. It is astonishing how building standards have become so unreliable these days. I am sure that it is a universal problem all over the world. When a job is not properly done, people’s lives are inevitably affected. The builders are willing to compensate for everything but how do they compensate for the time lost, the anxiety and the gradual erosion of your own sense of trust in people’s workmanship.
This is the picture that we have of the living room before the builders move in. How peaceful, it looks- The calm before the storm.
ช่วงอาทิตย์นี้กับอาทิตย์หน้าเราประจำการอยู่ที่เขาใหญ่ กลับไปคอนโดไม่ได้เพราะพื้นคอนโดชำรุดต้องซ่อมให้เสร็จก่อน โชคดีที่เรามีงานทำที่นี่และอากาศที่เขาใหญ่กำลังดี แต่ฉันก็ยังอดคิดไม่ได้ว่าเราต้องซ่อมพื้นคอนโดเป็นครั้งที่สองภายในระยะเวลาเพียงแค่หกเดือน ครั้งนี้ยิ่งแย่ไปกว่าเดิมเพราะต้องซ่อมพื้นที่กว้างกว่าเดิมมาก เราต้องขนเฟอร์นิเจอร์ออกจากห้องรับแขกกับห้องครัว ต้องทิ้งกุญแจไว้กับผู้รับเหมาจนกว่างานซ่อมจะเสร็จสิ้น ตอนซ่อมต้องมีทั้งฝุ่นซีเมนต์และเสียงดังมาก ชาวบ้านคงไม่ค่อยพอใจเท่าไหร่
คอนโดของเราค่อนข้างใหม่ เราย้ายเข้ามาอยู่เป็นพวกแรกเลย เรารู้สึกมึนงงกับมาตรฐานการก่อสร้างสมัยนี้ที่ไม่มีความน่าเชื่อถือ เข้าใจว่าเรื่องแบบนี้กลายเป็นปัญหาสากลที่มีอยู่ทั่วทุกสารทิศ เมื่องานไม่มีคุณภาพมันส่งผลกระทบไปที่ชีวิตของคนอื่นอย่างหลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้ ผู้รับเหมาอาจจะแสดงความเต็มใจที่จะชดใช้ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างให้กับเราอย่างเต็มที่แต่เขาจะชดใช้เวลาที่สูญเสีย ความวิตกกังวล และความรู้สึกไว้เนื้อเชื่อใจในฝีมือการทำงานของช่างที่ถูกกัดกร่อนไปจนหมดแล้วได้อย่างไร

There was an article in the Bangkok Post last Wednesday called “An Enduring Emblem of Excellence”by Laurent Banguet. Most people might know that the famous Eiffel Tower was first built as a temporary structure in 1889 for the Universal Exhibition. When the exhibition finished, the French people decided not to dismantle the tower since it was designed to stand for 20 years. Even as it was being built, some expert predicted that it was going to crash. But it didn’t. Now, more than a hundred years on, the tower is still a landmark in Paris, looking as fine as ever. It had stood the test of time and all kinds of weather conditions. The authority that takes care of the tower claims that the tower is in excellent shape and many believe that the most recognizable icon of Paris will be around for the next two to three hundred years.
A remarkable story.
In Thailand, we also have a lot of buildings, not in steel but some even made out of wood that date back more than a hundred years. I guess it is easy to say, “Why don’t people make things the way they use to anymore?” But no one can deny the fact that a job well done is not just about durability but about a piece of art that could be shared and admired beyond generations.
ในหนังสือพิมพ์บางกอกโพสต์เมื่อวันพุธที่ผ่านมามีบทความเรื่อง“สัญลักษณ์แห่งความสมบูรณ์แบบ” โดย ลอร็องต์ บังเกต์ หลายคนคงทราบดีว่าหอไอเฟลที่เรารู้จักกันดีนั้นเดิมทีเป็นสิ่งปลูกสร้างชั่วคราวสำหรับงาน Universal Exhibitionในปีค.ศ. 1889 เมื่องานเสร็จสิ้นลงคนฝรั่งเศสไม่ได้ทำการรื้อถอนเพราะหอคอยหลังนี้ถูกออกแบบให้อยู่ได้ถึง 20 ปี แม้ในช่วงที่กำลังก่อสร้างมีนักวิชาการบางท่านฟันธงว่าหอไอเฟลจะโค่นลงมาแบบไม่เป็นท่า แต่เหตุการณ์นี้ก็ไม่เกิดขึ้น จนบัดนี้เวลาได้ล่วงเลยมากว่าร้อยปีเครื่องหมายนครปารีสชิ้นนี้ยังอยู่ยั้งยืนยงทั้งที่ต้องผ่านบททดสอบมาตลอดและต้องทนต่อสภาวะการเปลี่ยนแปลงของอากาศต่างๆนาๆ ทางหน่วยการบำรุงรักษาหอไอเฟลกล่าวว่าทุกอย่างยังอยู่ในสภาพสมบูรณ์และจะอยู่เป็นไอคอนของปารีสได้อีกสองร้อยสามร้อยปี
เป็นเรื่องที่น่าทึ่งจริงๆ
บ้านเราก็มีสิ่งปลูกสร้างหลายแห่งที่ไม่ได้ทำจากเหล็ก อาจจะเป็นคอนกรีตเสริมเหล็ก หรือแม้กระทั่งไม้ที่มีอายุกว่าร้อยปีเช่นกัน มันง่ายที่เราจะตั้งคำถามว่าทำไมคนสมัยนี้ไม่ทำงานคุณภาพเหมือนคนสมัยก่อน แต่ทุกคนคงจะยอมรับว่างานที่ทำเสร็จสมบูรณ์นั้นมันไม่ใช่เรื่องเกี่ยวกับความคงทนถาวรเพียงอย่างเดียว แต่เป็นงานศิลปะที่สามารถแบ่งปันให้กับชนรุ่นหลังได้ดูได้ชมกัน
