Living between weekdays in a condo and weekends in a small cottage meant that we have to decide where we make things for fun and where we do serious work. So we have most of our tools and equipments for our handwork in Khao Yai and we have most of the books on the shelves in Bangkok. As it happens quite frequently, I found myself carrying a lot of things to Khao Yai and back both for work and for fun. That is, if they were portable. Books, laptops, knittings and crochets and small ornamental sewing projects are fine. However, most of my sewing work is done in Khao Yai. Most of my sewing notions and equipments are there and I am reluctant to move my old sewing machine. Portable as it is, my sewing machine is quite heavy and bulky. Then there is an old over-locker with all the bits pointing in all directions. It doesn’t seem practical to have them in the car on our trips.

I often think how nice it would be to be able to sew anywhere without having to have a sewing machine or an over-locker with me all the time. There must be a way to sew everything entirely by hand and still be able to have something that is unique, well finished, durable and even beautiful.
I know that for centuries before the invention of the sewing machine, people have been sewing everything by hand. As I look through the pages of fashion history books, I am more than convinced that great fashion can be made by hand.
I don’t often see garments that are made entirely by hand. I remember the time when I saw a simple skirt made by hand by a contemporary Korean designer in a boutique in New Zealand. I was so astonished that I must have stood there feeling the seams and turning the skirt inside out a million times before leaving the shop- sadly without the skirt. The charm was surely the human touch and the time that someone was willing to spend to make something.

We often say that there is not enough time and we don’t spend enough time making things for pleasures. I don’t think anyone should deny the happiness of creating things slowly and being present at all time while doing things. Sewing by hand is not as slow as people may think. I think, one gives more care and attention when one is not using the machine. The sewing machine does not always save time if you, yourself are not mindful. Unpicking mistakes is most time wasting and most likely to be frustrating.

A year ago, noojo recommended thet I see mairuru, a Japanese blog by the person by the same name. Mairuru crafts everything by hand and she was highly productive. Almost every day (before the arrival of her new born baby), she would create something new just because hand sewing was accessible and she was so good at it. She even gave step by step tutorials for those who might be interested in hand sewing. I was completely blown over by her enthusiasm.
I began to notice that there are many books that give good instructions on machine sewing, but not one that clearly teaches you how to sew by hand. I continued my search. Then I thought of this book.

Years ago while studying as a fashion student, I came across a quaint little hardback called A Big Book of Needlecraft. The better condition of the cover comes from Amazon UK. I lost the cover of mine soon after. There is still a lot of second hand copies on the internet. My version was in poor condition and I was obliged to photocopy many pages before the book fell apart.
The book was published in 1935, in the time where women were still making things at home by hand and home sewing machine was still something of a luxury that one could only dream of.
My initial feeling about the book was that it had a wonderful mixture of fashion inspirations that I could use to inspire my university assignments.
