Many Walks to Remember

That's my former boss walking somewhere in the crater of a volcano in New Zealand
One of the things that I remember really well about my former boss back in New Zealand is the fact that she spent a lot of time each day walking to and from work. It was a long walk from midtown Auckland to Epsom. Rain or shine she would walk with her husband. She told me that beyond the exercise they needed there was an opportunity to sort out their days and discuss matters at work. By the time they got home they would have said all that they needed to say and cleared their heads. Then they could get on with something else.

Kibune Shrine in the fog
I don’t think I could forget stories about my walking trips. I remember it more than other activities. There is always an element of fun and a little bit of fear that you might not be able to make it through. That fear is a positive challenge. When I could pull through, it is exhilarating every time.

Walking up hill to Kibune Shrine

In the forest on our serious walk

Ancient trees intertwining
Walking has been a big part of my life since I was a student. A friend introduced me to bush walking in Australia and we would go walking long distance in Curracurrang Cove at the Royal National Park in Sydney to ease off study stress. It wasn't just walking. Thrown into the package, there was rock climbing, swimming in the rock pools by the sea and watching big waves coming in from the ocean. Even in early spring when the temperature was still around 18 degrees Celsius  we would not hesitate to jump into the sea. From the rock edge we could see some big ships edging on the horizon. They disappeared from view quite fast. On a clear day you could see as far as Woolongong. I learnt to love the low lying Australian bush that sprouted after occasional bush fires. Their flowers were amazing. When I think of Australia I think of the salty air and the sunshine on my back.

Somewhere on the mountain

The sacred beast

The mist
Twice in my life I got lost while walking- both times in New Zealand as a lecturer. Once with a big group of university colleagues in an evergreen forest somewhere south of Auckland. Thank goodness the group was big so I didn’t panic. We kept walking in circles until we found our way out. It took us a long time to get out but we managed. Then there was another time when I went to Cathedral Cove with a friend. We got lost walking on an isolated beach at nightfall. As it was autumn, the light disappeared very quickly. All we could see was some faint lights from houses and the moon but we couldn’t figure out where they were. We also couldn’t tell whether we were going away or towards the place where we parked the car on top of the sand dune. We kept climbing the sand dunes to check where the car was. There was a sense of helplessness. We panicked then because it was taking too long to find the car and we were both women. Eventually we did and I live to tell the tale.

On the way down by train

45 degrees descent

Michel and I don’t get a lot of chances to walk along the streets of Bangkok for obvious reasons. However there is always Khow Yai. We walk there a lot. Still we find that when we travel overseas our main activity in cities and rural areas is walking and we would walk till we felt that our bodies would break into pieces. If we choose to do it any other way we would miss out on so much of lives around us.

Not to be missed cold noodles
These photos were taken at Kibune outside Kyoto. It was a drizzly summer day. We thought we would take a gentle walk on the hiking trail but it turned out to be serious mountain climbing. It took us around 90 minutes of ascending descending.  We didn’t really have the right shoes. As soon as we went pass the gate, it was tough. So much went through our heads while walking. I can understand how some people keep a diary of their walking trips. There was no other choice but to keep on going. Losing our breath and shaking at some point we stopped and talked. How long it has been since we were walking on trails this difficult. Too long! We stopped a few times at the small shrines on the way to wipe off the sweat and cool off with the water from the wells. We sweated so much even in the rain. I was thankful that my old shoes were comfortable…That is until the soles came off 5 minutes later. The humidity unglued my soles. On the last leg of our walk we took a path where we could take the train downhill to Kurama. By then it was after 2 pm. We treated ourselves with a big beautiful and elaborate mountain style lunch at a local restaurant. The proprietor of the restaurant discovered that we both have been bitten by mountain slugs. One of the slugs fell off Michel’s legs leaving spots of blood. I didn’t even know they existed there. Feeling sorry for Michel, I also discovered that I had two slugs while he had one. An onsen bath afterwards was a really good idea when you consider all that happened. My shoes survived the Eizan train ride back to Kyoto. I bought a new pair of shoes that evening. I left my broken shoes in the shoe shop.

Summer Picnic in Kyoto

Food taste better when eaten outside al fresco. At least that is how we feel. If the weather is good, a picnic is always a perfect idea. There is something about the soft breeze and open sky, day or night that we find appealing. We have eaten on the beach, in a park and almost everywhere with a good view. If we could we would prepare a full course meal. But a boiled egg will do if the location is impressive.

This dinner is a take-away food bought in Daimaru, Kyoto. We were sitting on the bench by the bank of the river. We saw children played together, the crowd thronged the bridge, cyclists swooped by the embankment, office workers sat down to relax, young ladies in yukata teetering on wooden shoes, lovers held hands and the decks of the restaurant came to life.  What a view of Kamo River on a warm summer evening. Those people seem to think so.

Dreaming of………

At the back of my head, there are always things that I dream of. Occasionally I would say them out loud to Michel but mostly I let these dreams hang around until one day they disappear or lose their meanings. I often find that many of what I day dream about become a reality when I take action or have the means or the time to do so.

Have a cottage garden with full variety of edible plants and flowers. At the moment we are having some long term issues with erosion. Our Khao Yai garden is on a slope where the entry from our street is slightly higher than the back. Heavy rain washes away the top layer of our soil leaving the remaining is hard and dry.

A worm farm. I wish I could get my act together and make one. You can download instructions from the internet and there are some easy videos on utube. We are not in Khao Yai all the time to take care of the worms. Having the worm farm on the condo’s veranda in Bangkok is out of the question. One day I will have it and what I get from it would be great for the soil.

A compost bin. This is also another way to create nutritious soil for the plant. I haven’t thought about this hard enough or long enough to decide where I could have this. The last time I encountered anything like a natural compost heap, it was by the banana grove. When I turned it over, there were plenty of white ants. Not a good sign for a semi-wooden home like ours. I should talk about this with experts…..when I have time.

A dog. Any dog really. Preferably a Thai dog with wistful eyes and short hair. If I could get a pedigree I wish for a beagle. I saw a beagle working as a drug detector once at an overseas airport baggage area- A big responsibility for someone so cute.

Bamboo. I wish to use more bamboo in my garden and in home decoration. An environmentalist who builds with bamboo said that you should soak bamboo in the water for 3 weeks to get rid of the starch. This way you could avoid insects. I will try that one day.

My dreams these days centers around our home in Khao Yai. Again it is a question of living in Khao Yai full time. A good garden and a pet- That is not too much to ask.

Techno Phobia

I might be showing my age but I think this post has more to do with my attitude or shortcomings rather than how old I am.
I have never been high tech. By that I mean all household electrical appliances and of course anything to do with the computer. It is the reason why I kept my old laptop for 10 years. I couldn’t bear to part with it. I have a serious case of technological phobia. The thought of getting a new computer and getting acquainted with something more like today’s computer scares me. I kept upgrading spare parts and adding more memory thinking that if I continued to do that this computer would continue to serve me. Despite everything that I did, the computer was losing its functions. I spent as much on spare parts and maintenance as what I paid for the computer until one day the spare parts were no longer available in the market. Obsolescence was inevitable. Then last month I noticed that the computer could not connect to the internet in my Khow Yai home. The connection has always been slow because we have to use the satellite dish system but this time there was no access. Michel’s computer could connect as per usual. I had to use his computer to send out a big file. Back in Bangkok I discover that although it was possible to use the internet, I couldn’t use Gmail or Facebook. The computer doctor told me that my main board has collapsed and it was time for the new computer. So I bought a new one. It turns out to be less than half the price I paid for my old laptop all those years ago and it is working brilliantly.

A note to myself- Dare to let go of something that doesn’t work. Don’t lie to yourself that it is still working when it slows you down and makes life so difficult. Get over that mental hurdle.

As someone allergic to modern technology, these activities are so much more my kind of things. (I thought it best not to show you my new computer and show these instead.)

I made many help bags with woven inserts.

This is one of the inserts which I designed and a friend got them woven for me in Mae Hong Son.

I knitted a white cape.

Why the white colour? I never knitted anything in white.

A loop scarf.

A beany.

I crocheted a hemp bag.

In order to manage the number of bananas which often rot before we could eat them all, I made the banana breads.

They taste like cakes.

I made bergamot shampoo to store in the fridge.

I tried some new varieties of sweet potatos.
