Dreaming of………

At the back of my head, there are always things that I dream of. Occasionally I would say them out loud to Michel but mostly I let these dreams hang around until one day they disappear or lose their meanings. I often find that many of what I day dream about become a reality when I take action or have the means or the time to do so.

ฉันมักจะกักฝันฟุ้งๆอยู่มุมหนึ่งในใจ บางครั้งอาจจะพูดออกมาให้คนใกล้ตัวได้ยินได้ฟังบ้าง แต่ส่วนใหญ่จะเก็บเอาไว้กับตัวจนมันจางหายหรือหมดควาหมายไปเอง ที่ประสพอยู่บ่อยๆคือฝันเป็นจริงได้ก็ต่อเมื่อฉันลงมือทำเอง หรือไม่ก็มีปัจจัยและเวลาเพียงพอในการทำให้สำเร็จ

Have a cottage garden with full variety of edible plants and flowers. At the moment we are having some long term issues with erosion. Our Khao Yai garden is on a slope where the entry from our street is slightly higher than the back. Heavy rain washes away the top layer of our soil leaving the remaining is hard and dry.

A worm farm. I wish I could get my act together and make one. You can download instructions from the internet and there are some easy videos on utube. We are not in Khao Yai all the time to take care of the worms. Having the worm farm on the condo’s veranda in Bangkok is out of the question. One day I will have it and what I get from it would be great for the soil.

A compost bin. This is also another way to create nutritious soil for the plant. I haven’t thought about this hard enough or long enough to decide where I could have this. The last time I encountered anything like a natural compost heap, it was by the banana grove. When I turned it over, there were plenty of white ants. Not a good sign for a semi-wooden home like ours. I should talk about this with experts…..when I have time.

กระบะปุ๋ยหมัก เป็นอีกวิธีหนึ่งที่จะเพิ่มสารอาหารให้กับดินและส่งต่อไปยังต้นไม้ ฉันยังไม่ได้มีเวลาไตร่ตรองว่าจะเอาไปตั้งไว้ตรงไหนดี เคยเห็นอะไรที่มีรูปแบบคล้ายๆกับกองปุ๋ยหมักที่เป็นเองตามธรรมชาติแถวดงกล้วยน้ำว้าที่บ้าน พอไปคุ้ยดูปรากฏว่ามีปลวกยั้วเยี้ยน่าสยดสยอง ไม่น่าจะดีสำหรับบ้านกึ่งไม้แบบบ้านเรา ต้องเอาเรื่องนี้ไปปรึกษาผู้รู้.......รอไปก่อน

A dog. Any dog really. Preferably a Thai dog with wistful eyes and short hair. If I could get a pedigree I wish for a beagle. I saw a beagle working as a drug detector once at an overseas airport baggage area- A big responsibility for someone so cute.

Bamboo. I wish to use more bamboo in my garden and in home decoration. An environmentalist who builds with bamboo said that you should soak bamboo in the water for 3 weeks to get rid of the starch. This way you could avoid insects. I will try that one day.

ไม้ไผ่ อยากใช้ไม้ไผ่สำหรับแต่งบ้านและสวนให้มากกว่านี้ นักอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติคนหนึ่งที่สร้างอาคารด้วยไม้ไผ่แนะนำว่าเราควรเอาลำไผ่ไปแช่น้ำไว้สัก 3 อาทิตย์เพื่อละลายแป้งออก เมื่อไม่มีแป้งก็จะไม่มีปัญหาเรื่องแมลง ต้องลองดู

My dreams these days centers around our home in Khao Yai. Again it is a question of living in Khao Yai full time. A good garden and a pet- That is not too much to ask.

I still use computer access to the internet. When we were in France from mid September to mid October, there was pretty limited internet access the entire time, and that which was available was very expensive. Anyway, I didn’t want to spend all the time on the internet. Being away from the internet allows more time to look around and really appreciate what is around you. But it meant that when I came back it was difficult to get started on blogging and facebook again. I simply lost my rhythm.

ฉันยังเป็นมนุษย์ที่ต้องใช้คอมพ์ในการเข้าอินเตอร์เน็ต ตอนอยู่ที่ฝรั่งเศสช่วงกลางเดือนกันยาถึงกลางเดือนตุลาเราแทบไม่ได้ใช้อินเตอร์เน็ตกันเลย เพราะไม่มีโอกาสและทุกครั้งที่มีอินเตอร์เน็ตให้ใช้ก็ต้องใช้แบบระมัดระวังเพราะแพงเกินเหตุ ยังไงฉันก็ไม่อยากใช้เน็ตตลอดเวลา เอาเวลาไปทำอย่างอื่นและชื่นชมกับบรรยากาศรอบตัวดีกว่า ทำอย่างนี้จนชิน ตอนกลับมาเลยปรับตัวเข้าหาบล็อกกับเฟซบุ๊คได้อย่างยากลำบาก อ่อนซ้อมไม่เข้าจังหวะซ๊ะที

Another thing. As soon as I came back there was flood crisis so there were many other issues to consider. Also our Wi Fi system in Khao Yai is not the fastest. I lost touch with people, didn’t respond to mails (sorry) and blogging seems like something from the distant past. As you can see, I have started blogging again in the last two posts. I will do more from now on.

อีกอย่างนึง ตอนกลับมาก็เป็นช่วงงานเข้าวิกฤตน้ำท่วมพอดี เลยต้องไปใส่ใจกับประเด็นอื่นๆ ไวไฟที่เขาใหญ่ก็เดี๋ยวดีเดี๋ยวร้ายอืดอาดมาก ฉันเลยขาดการติดต่อกับเพื่อนฝูง ไม่ได้ตอบเมล์ (ขอโทษค่ะ) และการทำบล็อกดูเหมือนจะเป็นเรื่องในอดีต อย่างไรก็ดี ตอนนี้ฉันได้เริ่มกลับมาทำบล็อกใหม่ ทำได้สองเรื่องแล้ว จะทำเพิ่มไปเรื่อยๆ

Here are some pictures of autumn in France. We were fortunate that this year, the weather remained warm right up until the final stage of our visit. Usually, by early September it would rain and the temperature would drop dramatically. What we enjoy is to go walking up country and enjoy picking black berries by the side of the road. There were still quite a lot of black berries around.

Once I was completely bored by a trade show in Paris. I left the venue early and found myself sitting down in a green area near the exhibition hall. I saw some beautiful honeysuckles. I always adore the scent of honeysuckles in perfumes and soaps. What could be better than honeysuckle seeds from Paris. I didn’t take the tree or even the flowers but I took some seeds and saved them in tissue paper. Now we have 2 trees in Khao Yai that are honey suckles from Paris. Their flowers are blooming well this year and the vines are climbing wildly.

ครั้งหนึ่งตอนไปงานแฟร์ที่ปารีส อยู่ดีๆก็รู้สึกเบื่อขึ้นมาเลยหันหลังกลับบ้านเฉยเลย ก่อนกลับได้ไปนั่งพักแถวๆปาร์คเล็กๆใกล้ๆกับสถานที่จัดงาน ได้ไปเห็นต้นสายน้ำผึ้ง(Lornicera)ออกดอกสวยหอมฟุ้ง ฉันชอบกลิ่นสายน้ำผึ้งในน้ำหอมและสบู่ เลยเกิดความคิดจะเอาเมล็ดสายน้ำผึ้งจากปารีสไปปลูกที่บ้าน ฉันไม่ได้เอาต้นไป ไม่ได้เด็ดแม้แต่ดอก แต่เก็บเมล็ดใส่กระดาษเช็ดปากไว้เป็นอย่างดี ตอนนี้ที่บ้านเราที่เขาใหญ่มีต้นสายน้ำผึ้งจากปารีสสองต้น ปีนี้เริ่มออกดอกและขยายกิ่งก้านผิดหูผิดตาเลย

Here’s what my mother-in-law sent me as a present. Some seeds she has collected over many..many years but never had the opportunity to grow. Some also came from my in-law’s travels and others from the magazines and local shops.

We went to Loey Province recently. I had my mind set on acquiring the seeds two different plants given opportunity to do so. I give you a clue- What constitutes denim cloth? They are cotton and indigo. Here’s what I got from the Tai Dum village in Loey.

เมื่อไม่นานมานี่ฉันกับมิเชลได้ไปเที่ยวจังหวัดเลย ฉันตั้งใจไว้แต่แรกว่าจะไปเก็บเมล็ดจากต้นไม้สองชนิดถ้ามีโอกาส ใบ้ให้นิดนึง- ผ้าเดนิมทำจากอะไร? เส้นใยฝ้ายกับคราม(หรืออินดิโก) นี่เป็นเมล็ดที่ได้มาจากหมู่บ้านไทดำ

Cotton- Some are naturally brown and others are classic white.

I didn’t know whether to separate the wooly bit of the cotton from the actual seed or not before planting. I ended up planting them with the wool. The indigo seed came in pods and I scrunched them in my hands before scattering the seeds in the soil.

Positive results but this is just the beginning. How little do I know these plants after so many years in the fashion industry. I don’t know how many cotton plants yield enough to make a meter of woven cloth. I do not know how to use indigo dye and make them color fast. I have a fantasy to try to at least see these plants grow organically to maturity. Who knows what may happen after. This might be a platform for my creativity.

Thai Farmer's Cotton Indigo Pants

Thai people don’t grow a lot of cotton for weaving any more. They buy their raw cotton probably from India- One of the biggest grower in the world. I hope that eventually all the cotton in the world would be ecologically safe (no pesticides and chemical fertilizers) and socially sound (fair and sustainable business for farmers). Too many people suffer and die from cotton cultivation. Here is a video about why organic cotton is a better option. You don’t have to know Japanese to understand the message.
